Learning & Presenting Ritual Part-2

Brothers near and far.

Last month, I presented an article on some ideas for learning ritual. This month I would like to add some thoughts on presentation.

When you have a section of ritual memorized, start saying it out loud as you would in lodge. We all have been in the situation where we had the words down cold in our mind but when on the floor they just wouldn't come. As I mentioned last month, reading and speaking use different parts of the brain. Speaking the words firms up the connections between them so practicing a new part aloud, every day, is not too often.

Try to remain calm while presenting ritual. We all suffer some anxiety but learning to relax can work wonders for your delivery. Exercise, visualizing calming images, deep breathing and meditation can all serve as pathways to calming the mind.

Now that you are ready to start on the 'Acting' part of ritual it is time to look at how you present the work. An outstanding ritualist, Jim Howard, once told me that when he was preparing he would stand before a mirror and enact his part. Some find it better to use a video camera or smart phone to record and review their delivery. Remember also, Slow Down, Masonic Ritual is not a race, in particular the opening and closing.

Once you have spent all this time memorizing, and speaking the words in a fitting manner start giving some thought to the meaning of our beautiful ritual. Masonic ritual is ultimately a teaching tool, not just for the recipient but the brother delivering it as well. Place emphasis on the important bits. Let your verbalization and carriage reflect the emotions and understanding you have gained following this process.

The big payoff for all this work will be your ability to get the point of our ritual across to the new candidate or brother while at the same time educating yourself in the ideas and philosophies of this wonderful fraternity. In addition you will gain the respect of your brothers and the satisfaction of a job well done.

Hope to see you soon in Lodge.
